In the spring of 1976 W149 was morphing into 15Q. The new jocks actually arrived before the new call letters! Here's Kid Curry on one of his first days on the air~

I finally found some old photos. And a full page ad from WMDR that I will get scanned soon. Attached is a photo of me from 1982 or so. Its when I was working weekends at WIVK-FM. This was the older control room...note the 45's in the bins! Sheesh! (Scott Black)

I see Ed had his snappy, leather portfolio at his side. He was no doubt on his way to close a big deal for sales. I have lots of wonderful memories of working on Ed's show (for seven years!). I landed on afternoons at WIVK after a whopping three months of reporting - it was my first full time job. Ed was already a seasoned and settled professional by then. Ed taught me one of the most important lessons I ever learned as a radio personality. Respect the listeners. And, really, hasn't that been the key to success and great memories for so many of us? Even with the crackpots and psychos we've had to carefully navigate around, the listeners know which jocks are talking TO them and which jocks are just talking AT them. That's when the loyalty really kicks in. I could tell lots of tales about Ed...but I won't. I may be blonde right now, but I'm not stupid. Happy Birthday Ed! (Tonya Stoutt-Brown)

Two of the biggest media stars to emerge from WRJZ are Adele Arakawa and John Isley. Here are some classic moments...

Monday, November 10, 2008

WRJZ came onto the Knoxville radio scene in late 1976. The station had a slick major market sound and had brought in some great sounding DJ's when it debuted...JJ Scott, Rick Kirk, Tim Edwards. The program Director was Bob Kagan, who had been part of 15Q. Later John Boy Isley and Adele became mainstays. There were several hold overs from the WETE era, mainly the morning drive and the afternoon drive jocks, Curtis Parham and Walker Johnson. Together they formed the legendary duo, CP and Walker. Here's the twosome in 1979 plus some additional 'RJZ stuff-

Steve Spurrier's name is being floated around here in the swamp country (Florida, where 101 lives) as the next Vols coach?

1975, awh, the good old days!

101 heard from Keith Brunson-

"I miss those days. I gotta be honest...I really do."

This week we are staying in '75. Ktowns two rockers at that time, WNOX and WKGN, battled for listeners, both featured very smooth midday DJs. Here's Frank Erwin on WKGN and Todd Martin on WNOX-

101 wants to hear from you! Where were you in '75?

Tuesday, November 04, 2008

101 hopes you will exercise your right and vote today!

The audio vault remains in 1975. Mike Beach ruled the Ktown landscape for decades, WIVK, W149, WETE, WKGN, WNOX, 15Q, WIMZ (Did we leave any place out Beachman?)

Here Mike's from August 1975...

Kudos to Coach Fulmer and the great success he added to the Vols tradition!
