Where's the snow? 101 is having a great time in the olde hometown! Fotos are of last night's Vol Ball!

101 received a note from our friend Jean Ash (I'm including it unedited...and we hope you are feeling great soon Jean)~

Hey, George, glad you’re in town and hope you enjoy your visit back “home!” While you’re here, go to Borders or maybe B and N and take a look at the new book Ed Hooper just put together of photos called “Knoxville’s WIVK.” It’s one of those Acadia Publishing books that feature photos of lots of places and topics. Lots of great pix there and maybe you could even scan some on slow Website days! Actually, I think WIVK is selling them at a little discount so you might drop by the studio. Also, I have an old reel-to-reel tape recorder that worked the last time I tried it, many moons ago, that I’d be willing to let Don Lindsey borrow, especially if he could dub some tapes of mine onto CDs – is he the same one as the AAA spokesman? If so, I know him. Have him get in touch at the number below. I’m off to the hospital tomorrow for a leetle back surgery and will be there a few days, so maybe he should call in a week or two. Another suggestion – maybe next time you get up here you could schedule a time and place for all the K-town area readers to get together for coffee or an adult beverage! It’d be fun to see folks. Thanks a lot for your work on the site! It’s fun to read. (Jean Ash)

PS...101 got the book, wow!!! Anyone wanna grab a cup of joe? Let me know...

Back in the mid 70's Ron Ashburn was passing the news anchor baton to Paul Oscar Anderson at WNOX 990. Both legends had big pipes! Here's POA~

Back in 1976 AM music stations were still viable but FM was beginning to make its move. WKGN 1340 featured Scott Sams and Mike Beach~

Thanks to Jeff Jarnigan for the WKGN album cover photo!

The name and voice of Ron Ashburn is held in high esteem in Ktown radio history. Here's a promo featuring Ron on WNOX in 1976~

Vroom!- In this day and age when Wall Street investments appear risky, 101 recommends you invest in season tickets for the NASCAR races at Bristol Motor Speedway. For decades there was a waiting list for tickets that could keep you on hold for up to a decade, but now due to the recession tickets are available. Check out http://bristoltix.com.

'Twas the night before Christmas! Check out this vintage photo and story from contributor Don Lindsey-

Howdy!

Someone mentioned wanting some pics from the ‘60s. Here’s one of WSEV’s control room from 1969. To the board’s left was the AM transmitter with its huge tubes filled with plasma dancing around to whatever music was playing at the time. To the immediate left in the rack was a turntable-in-a-drawer which we used as one of the stereo turntables. After AM went dark at sundown, we’d flip some switches and turn on the FM stereo transmitter. At that point, we’d load up the turntable on the right and the turntable-in-a-drawer with actual stereo records. That went on till Midnight when we’d sign off.

The announcer with the dorky clothes and haircut is me, of course, and I haven’t seen that weight in years. In the room just beyond the window behind the board, Dolly Parton used to perform on Saturday morning live broadcasts. That happened before I came there in 1967, but folks like Larry Trotter and Sam Truan (who’s still in radio now) would tell me about those times.

Anybody got a good reel-to-reel player they can loan/sell me? Got enough quarter-inch tape to stretch to the Moon, probably containing lots of good stuff from some very talented people in Knoxville … but I have no idea what’s on most of them!

Thanks again for the great site!

Don Lindsey

Kerry Lambert began his radio career behind the mic at WKGN in the mid 70's. Kerry's first on air name was "Kris Lee, Kris with a K"-

101 dropped in on Walker and Swang on Friday and was a guest on their Voice South show!

Today 101 hears from Sundra~

Glad to know my name is still floating around down there in K-town and beyond. I traded in Thompson as a last name more than 20 years ago. Now go by Sundra Hominik. Wow. I'd almost forgotten about WATO-WETQ radio. I was there for a wild five months from April 1981 to August 1981 before joining WATE TV (and if you check your KtownRadio archives you'll see I was sent packing from WATE in 1984 along with some other greats.) People now don't believe it when I tell them I worked at country music station. I remember the words to one of the hot hit songs that summer: I'm just an ole lump of coal but I'm gonna be a diamond some day. Many of you may not know that my love for radio and journalism started back in early to mid 1970s when I was a teen listening to WKGN. Wasn't it Joe Anderson who was the news anchor? He got me hooked on news. I'm still in the the biz sort of. Now as senior editor at Richmond Times-Dispatch. See what I do for a living now at http://www.timesdispatch.com/. Ran into another former broadcaster (albeit TV) up here in Richmond. Tom Poe from the WBIR in the 70s.

101 visits our inbox today~

Thought this was a great article about Booby -- you may want to share it with the group. I just had dinner with Alan Sneed and spoke on the phone with Mick Rizzo -- we were all saying how much fun it is to read your blog -- thanks so much for keeping this going. What a treat to hear about Jimmy Vineyard -- one of the really nice guys. Keep up the good work.

42 years and counting for Bobby Denton-Vols PA Announcer By Kevin Kelleher

It is fair to say that by using his God-given talent, Bobby Denton has added to the great traditions surrounding University of Tennessee football. He brings his ‘old school’ style of announcing to a high tech control booth. (Chip Emerson)

I’d like to know if you could recall something. As a kid growing up in Fort Wayne, Indiana in the 1970’s, my sister and I would listen to our portable radio/record player that would pick up stations from all over late at night, and we used to listen to a station that we think was out of Knoxville. The first hour we would hear country gospel, like the Chuck Wagon Gang. The second hour it would be a country show with a theme song of Buck Owens’ “Tiger by the Tail.” I think the host was named Ernie. We would fall asleep listening to this show. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! (Peggy McDaniel)

Before he became "Disco Dick", Dick Winstead worked middays at WNOX. Here he is in 1976-

Hello! Brad Allen, from Journal Broadcast Group Knoxville. Just found this site today, love the 80's CP and Walker pic from the U102 studios! Brings back memories. I came aboard U102 in '91 and have been "there" ever since...ah yes, the traffic light. Lets see if I remember...red was the hot line, yellow was the "mic is on...watch it light, and green was the news line. During the blizzard of '93 and with just enough generator power to keep the control room only powered up, we kept the mic on (potted down) in order to use the yellow light as the only light in the room.
Lots of memories in that room...in that building, which no longer exists as our studios as we moved to Amherst road. In my 17 years here with U102: U102 became MY102 (Oldies), which then became Oldies 102, later to become STAR 102(.1) as it stands today. I was on U102 (My102-Oldies 102) as a jock and later program director from '91 until the frequency flip in early 2001. I moved with the Oldies format to our sister station 93.1, which continued the Oldies format before going 80's a few years back. Just recently, 93.1 went Country and is now known as Q93. STAR 102.1 is owned by the Journal Broadcast Group. We have four local stations. STAR 102.1, HOT 104.5, AM1040 WKTI (formerly WQBB) and the newest addition Q93 (formerly WMYU 93.1 The Best of the 80's!) I could write a novel here with wonderful stories and all those I've worked with who have come and gone during my 17 years here, but I'll save it for another day.

101 had a great time this past week seeing former WIVK DJ Jimmy Vineyard. The photo above is of the WPAP Panama City control room...

The 101 Audio Vault travels to 1976 and Chris Grabenstein on W149~

(Chris told 101 that during December he would call himself "Chris Kringlestein" on the air!!!)

101 heard from a WIVK DJ from the 60's!!! We need more photographs and memories from the 1960's decade. Shoot 101 an email to KtownRadio@gmail.com

THANK YOU THE WEB SITE OF KNOXVILLE RADIO. I WAS THE 7 TO MIDNIGHT GUY ON WIVK FROM 1968 UNTIL THE FIRST PART OF 1972. IT WAS AN EXPERIENCE THAT THIS OLE BOY WILL NEVER FORGET. I ALSO WORK AT WBIR-FM IN 1976...DURING THE MORNING SHOW. THOSE DAYS ARE STILL THE BEST. (RON CAMPBELL, NASHVILLE, TN.)

Back in 1976 Eddy Roy was the Program Director and morning DJ at WNOX~

101 heard from Dave Foulk-

Sorry to be a little late about my memories of Ron Ashburn. When I was working mornings at the old WBIR Radio, I would often sit with Ron at the Krystal on Broadway and Oglewood and have breakfast with him. Ron was a true gentleman and a professional. And what a voice! He was what I wanted to be when I grew up.

PS- Check out Dave's blog, he has a "new" picture of himself, he's lost 65+ pounds!!!

The 101 road show is in the Florida pan handle this week and I stopped in to see my olde WIVK buddy Jimmy Vineyard. JV is VP/GM of Clear Channel in Panama City. It was fun taking a tour of the studios and even sitting in the DJ seat again. Jimmy and I worked together when I was hired as a weekend DJ at WIVK back in 1976. You must admit, neither of us have changed a bit (ha)...

101 received alot of info regarding Ron Ashburn, the Ktown news anchor staple for decades. We hear from Your Dave, Bill Beason, and Sir Bernard~

"Hey Greek. To SS who asks about Ron Ashburn here is the story. Ron was from Kansas where he attended the University of Kansas. At the end of WW II, Ron was discharged from the U.S. Army and arrived in NYC. His goal was to work in New York possibly on Broadway, in an agency or for a network. He applied at all the networks and was told there were no openings at the time. At CBS, Ron was well received and was told about an opening in Knoxville at WNOX. At that time there was auditions for a national account at an ad agency. Not knowing who the client was, nor the pay, Ron auditioned for the read. It was a short read only 4 words, but, those 4 words are probably the most famous in advertising history. For his work, Ron received $50.00 and a carton of the product. The last line of the commercial....Pell Mell famous cigarettes, "Outstanding", AND THEY ARE MILD". Ron arrived at WNOX in the late 40's where he remained until he retired in the 80's. He had a sweet delivery and nothing you could do would shake him up while on the air." (Dave Young)

"Hey 101! I remember Ron Ashburn! He was a very professional newsman that serviced in the Pacific Theatre covering World War 2. After the war, Ron worked for United Press International before moving back to Knoxville and becoming a newsman for WNOX. Mr. Ashburn's famous tag line; "And they are mild" was for Pall Mall cigarettes. Someone else spoke the word "Outstanding" which proceeded Ron's statement to make the complete tag line; "Outstanding! And they are mild". For his part, Ashburn was given a carton of Pall Mall a week for life. As far as working with Ron Ashburn, I considered it an honor! He never failed to meet me in the hall or come into the control room to say hello or ask how my day was going. If Ron liked you he would do anything for you. One day while I was serving as interim PD at WNOX, Ron got word that a new Program Director had been hired and he got upset that I would be fired. He went to then GM Pete Dryer and told him he would leave if I was fired. When I was let go, along with Dryer, Ron retired several months later. I lost touch with him when I went to Nashville and have often wondered what became of him. Ron Ashburn was a great newsman and I often think of his professionalism and warm personality." (Bill Beason aka Buzz Dailey)

"Hi, it's 'Sir' Bernard or plain old Bernie Quayle as I am nowadays. SS asked if anyone had memories of Ron Ashburn, I certainly do. I was doing the breakfast show on WNOX one Saturday morning, I think it was 1970. Ron Ashburn was the duty newsman. Like every Saturday we were expected to test the Emergency Broadcast System. A simple procedure that went like clockwork - except this morning. Ron came into the studio, the colour drained from his face, his hands were shaking as he asked me to hand over to him. I could not believe what happened next. The message was so grave, I truly believed World War 3 had started. NORAD had once before detected what it believed to be missiles headed towards America but they did not alert the population at that time - we were now on full alert. I've reproduced part of the text from the Knoxville Sentinel the day after the event. It was almost as if they had a war and nobody came. Only it wasn't a war. It was a mistake on the part of the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD), at Colorado Springs. Instead of the regular test message NORAD sends broadcasting stations across the nation every Saturday morning, NORAD sent the real thing. "This is an emergency action notification directed by the President. Normal broadcasting will cease immediately. Only stations holding NDEA (National Defense Emergency Alert; may stay on the air. WNOX was the NDEA station for the area, the one that stays on the air to broadcast at such times, and is what I had to broadcast: "The President of the United States has directed that we interrupt our normal program. This is the Emergency Broadcast system, Normal broadcasting has been discontinued for an indefinite period during an emergency action condition. This station WILL continue broadcasting to furnish news, official information and instructions." I can tell you that until the correction came half an hour later, Ron and I were quaking in our boots. The most amazing thing was that all the other stations seemed to have either not noticed or ignored the alert. As SS stated, Ron's news delivery was awesome." (Sir Bernard)

Knoxville has a new "Q" country station...back in 1981 another "Q" country station went on the air at 94.3 FM, WETQ. The station loaded up on some great talent including Eddie and Linda in the morning (Eddie Beacon and Linda Scott)~

Hello, I'm CF Bailey and need to contact a Perry GraphJan (I think is the name) to do a radio interview for an upcoming Bluegrass Show in Maryville at the Music Row entertainment center. Trying to locate WMDR 1470. Thanks!

There was a TV commercial for a cigarette where the final tag was spoken by a radio newsman in Knoxville radio. I believe his name was Ron Ashburn. Does anyone have any memories of him? He may have had a health condition that caused his eyes to stay shut so he would memorize his newscasts -and what a great writer! Awesome delivery! Your fan, SS!

WMDR was the former WEAG in Maryville, TN. My father and I bought controlling interest in the station in the mid 80s (83 I think). Since 1947 Maryville had had a country station and an easy listening station (WEAG, WGAP) we dropped the easy listening and went top 40. Scared more than a few elderly folk but it sure was fun. Although we were a day timer we had a big staff of real talent and WGAP just hated us. Couple of good ones in the picture you posted were Ernie Baker (top left corner) who was the most listened to night talk guy in Knoxville on the old WETE (Ernie The Bartender) and then became really big as the guy who wrote the news for CP and Walker. Baker was such a part of CP and Walker that on remotes we used to sign his name for those wanting an autograph and tell them his writing hand had been shot off in the Spanish American War. Hey, they were kids and most believed it! Others pictured were Becky Lynn (former WIMZ/WIVK) star. Dad and I sold the station in 99 to Jim Holiday (former Cas Walker announcer) and he later sold it again. The format now is far FAR right wing talk and it is a great place to order your supplies for the coming whatever, you know canned goods, water, shotguns, gold all the essentials. WMDR stood for....the Music Doctor. It was a great experience and we sure did have the talent! Walker Johnson

30 years ago today, December 2 1978, Ed Rupp sat behind the microphone at WIVK for the first time. On that Saturday morning at midnight, Ed teamed up with Dan Bell who taught Ed the WIVK board. The next night at midnight Ed did his first show (audio)...he followed me on the air that night!

Did you watch the Lane Kiffin announcement on Monday? I'm betting that the new coach's wife, Layla, has already won over the orange faithful.

What a treat...101 was dial twisting on the www on Monday afternoon and tuned into The Phil Show on WNOX. He had Ed Brantley and Bobby Denton as guests and they were talking about the good old days at WIVK.

Welcome to December! 101 hopes you had a wonderful holiday weekend...perhaps too much turkey!

The 101 Audio Vault ventures back to 1976 and features Bob "Shotgun" Kelly. This air check features Bob on the air when W149 was converting to 15Q.

Grady's Good Times restaurant is now only part of Ktown folklore but the first Grady's opened on this date in 1982 in the Papermill Road location.
