Happy Birthday wishes to Roger Epperson! (foto)

It's a retro weekend as we dig back thru our 101 Audio Vault and feature a clip we played earlier...

101 got an email from Tim and Willy, morning hosts at KMLE in Phoenix (Becky Lynn is their sidekick)...Here's Rebecca on WIMZ, circa- 1987~

Bits and Bacon Pieces from 101...

From Smokey Burns~ "Hi George, don't know if this qualifies as a Knoxville radio site since it covers the time after I ditched the Smokey moniker and left Knoxville, but the Robert Murphy site is up and running at www.murphyinthemorningradio.com ! Still enjoying checking out the Ktown site."

From 500MegaWatt~ "Bernie...But from that picture I believe he is in the production room instead of the control room, but ask Your Dave!"

From Aaron Campbell~ "Just wanted to pass this along to you. Ted Lowe Sr. Owner of WKXV AM 900 was killed because of a traffic accident in December."

From the 101 Birthday Club...Happy Happy to former WKGN jock Gary Drake!

We all have memories that allow us to race back to our childhood, for me, being a radio fanatic from birth, I was mesmerized when a unique sounding voice took over the air waves in Ktown, circa- 1969.

His name is Sir Bernard J. Quayle, and he hosted the morning show on WNOX.

Today we say "Happy Birthday Bernie"!!!

Today 101 returns to the "alpha" of WRJZ.

In October '76 620 AM was still WETE, a fun sounding MOR format station. The DJ line up featured Curtis Parham in the morning, Jim Humphries middays, Walker Johnson afternoons, and Mark McKinney at night.

Fast forward to November and WRJZ was born! The station was nicely prepared to take Ktown's rock listeners by a storm...

The new station retained the WETE drive time jocks and teamed them up as..."CP and Walker" and of course the rest is history!

Bob Kaghan was PD and worked 9-noon and was followed by production guru JJ Scott.

Tim Edwards "Tim again" was imported from WMFJ in Daytona Beach as the 4-8p jock. Lee Taylor worked nights...of course that slot was soon turned over to a youngster named John Isley "John Boy". The overnight DJ was Rick Kirk, who went on to spend decades on the air in Ktown.

Around that same time in Ktown...101 received a swine flu shot at the doc, sound familiar? And...Vols football coach Bill Battle resigned, enter Johnny Majors!

Also heard on WRJZ in its early days...Jim Riddings, Charlie Fox, Pete Michaels, Ernie Baker, and Ann Alexander.

This is a test, for the next 60 seconds this station will...

Howdy, for some unknown gremlin type reason the audio (which starts as video) will not play today.

We've got Milton Jones working to correct the issue. Have a groovy 101 Sunday!

It's time once again for "The Wonderful World of Cat"...Claude A. Tomlinson, Ezra Schultz, and Lester Longmire on WIVK~

A great Vols website is "GoVolsXtra" and they now have an iPhone app, gotta love the 21st century!

For decades WNOX and WKGN were Ktown's rockers with W149 joining the mix in '71 as an AOR type format. (Not sure AOR is the exact description...but W149 was a fun and different radio station)

Things changed in '76, first W149 evolved into 15Q with large market jocks bombarding Ktown...Steve West, Bob "Shotgun" Kelly, Mick Rizzo, Kid Curry, etc. were the first DJs.

Then in late '76 WETE became WRJZ, and CP and Walker were hatched! One of the original WRJZ jocks was production guru JJ Scott, here's JJ~

101 hopes you are having a great 2k10...and wants to hear from you!

Some have inquired, so...here's 'da scoop~ Around age 10 (1968) I knew I wanted to be a broadcaster, my early radio heroes were John Ward and Milo and Ernie (Atlanta Braves). Like many of you I fell in love with my transistor radio and soon began writing down DJ line ups, airchecking DJs, and clipping newspaper articles.

I was once told, "find a need and fill it"...so with the invent of modern technology, its a pleasure to share all my "stuff" which originated from my broadcast center on Rockingham Drive in West Hills (my bedroom).

Earl Lauderdale at WBLC Lenoir City broke me in, Bobby Denton at WIVK took a chance on an 18 year old freshman at UT and hired me to work weekends, Steve Bridgewater believed in me and allowed me to have a great final year on the radio at WRJZ when they played country, and Your Dave Young was the one who truly understood my potential...which ended up not being on the radio, but that belief stood the decades and is still greatly appreciated.

I know you have a story too...so send it to 101...we love to copy and paste!!!

Here's one of the classics that I captured...let's go back to '79 and enjoy WBIR-FM changing from country to rock~

It's Dooley Time!

Coach Derek Dooley..."thinks like Neyland, talks like Fulmer, and has Bill Battle hair. Goodtimes have returned to Big Orange Country!"

Here's a quickie from Bill Beason on WNOX~

Can you ever get too much of Claude Tomlinson? Here is the Great Day show with Jean Ash as news anchor~

Since packing suitcases has been in the Vols news lately, 101 decided to feature our very own Suitcase Simpson from the 101 Audio Vault.

Back in '83 Suitcase was going by the cagey made up on air name "Bill Miller" on U-102.

The DJ team was Dave Dunaway, Suitcase, Tom Van Hart, Larry Trotter, and Chuck Edwards~

Regarding the recent UT football debacle, my late great Yiayia had a saying, loosely translated..."when you talk to butts, farts come out"...(sorry for the vulgarity)

Thanks to modern technology 101 has been up to the minute on all UT activities. Via the iPhone app "WunderRadio" I was able to listen to Jack Ryan on WIVK the night of the "great mattress burn" on campus, and have kept up with the action in the AM...Doc, Jeff, and Heather on Sports Animal!

Running off at the 101 typewriter...

101's ace reporter and longtime host of WIVK's "Sunday Survey" Dan Bell reports that Mr. Schultz's first name is EZRA. Yep, Ezra Schultz!

From the 101 research department...Which DJ currently on the air in Ktown has been on the air the longest? Right now it looks like that would be Eddie Beacon, the swingin' deacon! Eddie spoke his first insegrevious words in Ktown way back in '65...that's 1965 not 1865!

Are you on Twitter? Say hello to 101 and let's tweet!

101 wants to hear from you...photographs, memories, air checks, send them our way!!!

Go Vols! What a great win for UT as they beat #1 Kansas 76-68 in Knoxville on Sunday in front of a national TV audience. Doesn't Coach Pearl remind you of Ray Mears!

By the mid 1980's Claude the Cat had an additional sidekick running the board and bantering with him on Great Day on WIVK...along with Lester Longmire and Mr. Schultz! Question...anyone know what Mr. Schultz's first name was?

Page 3...

If your ear is no longer within listening range of Ktown you can still tune into local radio in Ktown via "apps" like WunderRadio!

Got snow?

Happy Friday! 101 wants to hear from you, send your photographs and memories. Floating around the social networking sites today is..."Today would be Elvis Presley's 75th birthday. Where were you when you heard the news of his death on August 8 1977?"

Speaking of b'days...Happy Happy to Chris Huff!

Here's Larry Trotter on U-102~

Around 1981 Mack Sanders bought WNOX from Scripps-Howard and by mid '82 was adding 95.3 FM as the sister station...playing country. The call letters were WNKX (KiX 95)!

Here's Tom Miller~

Happy back to work Monday! Let's remember January 1986...

The new year kicked off with the football Vols defeating Miami 35-7 in the Sugar Bowl.

Phil Williams was the morning DJ at WIMZ, Keith Lambert anchored afternoons.

There was a show playing on HBO called "2010"!

On January 28 at 11:38 am the shuttle Challenger exploded after lift off...where were you?

The big 3 news anchors were Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, and Tom Brokaw...FOX was still just a hound!

And in the middle of the FM dial position Curtis Parham was teaming up with Mike Clark~

Happy belated birthday to Dennis Willard!

Happy 2010!

Back in '86 101 had already migrated from platters to platters...records to dinner plates and was working as a manager at Grady's Goodtimes! On this one particular day I was also playing Barney Fife, as reported by WIVK's Mike Hammond~

Page 3...

101 received a note from Martha Rose Woodward~"The decade does not end until the end of 2010. A new decade begins Jan. 1 2011...don't believe everything you see in the media; they get a lot of things wrong."
