"The last time WIVK-FM was not #1 was the April/May 1980 Arbitron book, when WEZK had a 19.9 share to WIVK-FM's 19.7. I have every ARB report for the market since they started surveying it in 1970. Would love to see some of the old Pulses though if anyone's got any copies to share!" (Chris Huff)

The year is '76, America celebrates it's 200th birthday and the verbiage "Spirit of '76" is alive and well.

Over at WKGN 1340 Dr Al was still PD but had given up morning drive for middays. Here's their line up~

6 Steve West
10 Dr Al
3 Pat O'Brien
7 Barry Tucker (Mike Beck)
12 Kris Lee (Kerry Lambert)

The 101 Audio Vault features Pat O'Brien...

From the 101 InBox here are some answers to Mike Beck's question...

"I’m pretty sure WEZK or 93.7 or whatever beat IVK one or two books sometime in the 80’s. Then it goes back to 1966 that they have been No. 1. Of course up until about the mid 70’s it was the AM 850 WIVK. Then WIVK FM took over even though it was a Mono Fm until about 75. Jim Dick’s turn your half a radio into a whole radio with an FM converter in the 60’s drove FM penetration in the market from 20% to 80% in about 18 months from 66 until 68." (Paul Lyle)

"On the question of which station was the last to top WIVK in the ratings– I just wanted to throw my guess in. Was it WIMZ? Seems I remember the big “Frogbusters” promotion hitting WIVK pretty hard right before I went to work there. Several stations have hit number one in various day parts or demographics over the years, but WIVK was number-one in the 12+ category during all of my 14 years there and beyond." From the 101 InBox~

"Hey George, hope you're doing well. Question for you. I read today that WIVK has been #1 for 109 straight books, which surprised me a little, I thought it might even be more than that! Do you know the last station to beat WIVK? My guess is WEZK. Thanks!"

From the 101 InBox Chip takes us down memory lane...

"Hey George...I know George Mooney's name is spoken often. He is an icon of Knoxville radio. George's son Pat, was my roommate while we were at UT. I spoke to him last week for the first time in over 16 years. Good news, George is alive and kicking. He moved to Anguilla for a few years, after his second wife's death. He is now 92 and living in an assisted living facility in Knoxville. There were a lot of us who were invited to his house on the lake when he was in his hey day. After a few "POPS", George would enthrall us with all his stories and then -- and this is true--would get behind the boat and barefoot ski behind Cherokee Blvd laughing at the top of his lungs. He is a true character --I am sure there are more stories that I would really like to hear from others of you out there. And the famous "Look at that Son of a Bitch run" line during one of his UT football broadcasts!" (Chip Emerson)

From the 101 InBox~

"WBLC was my first job in the latter 60's and Rick Smith was there. Jerry Jenkins and Mike Beach pulled a shift and the general manager was Ray Stockard. I remember the mixing board in the production room had a bad habit of working intermittently and needed a tap on the side to make it work again. Ray kept a hammer in the production room and you could hear him whamming the board trying to get it to work again. That poor board finally died from all the hammer blows to the right side. LOL" (Jerry Howell)

"It was Mike Beverly though who did the voice for the Reverend Judge Noose Coolidge, Pastor of the First Church of Gooey Death and Discount House of Religion which so far as I know only ran the one time, in response to the issue of UT playing football on a Sunday (in Hawaii). It was also Mike Beverly in the hot air balloon when it “crashed” with Dave Lambert’s dads battery." (500 MegaWatt)

Happy Birthday wishes to former Ktown radio star Becky Lynn!

From the 101 InBox~

"Thanks for reading this. I discovered and enjoyed your website today. I grew up in Knoxville. I attended two high schools in the early 1960s. Halls for two years and then graduated from Fulton High School in 1964. OK, so I have two radio personalities that I would enjoy sharing some memories with. Is there anybody at Ktown Radio or that you know who would remember: Jim Lloyd, who was at WROL for many years. He was my uncle and had one of the first radios in Knoxville. Ron Ashburn, who was at WNOX doing news and the farm report. I grew up as his next door neighbor and have some great memories of Ron and his wife Jane. Thanks!" (Allen Kelley Warrenton, North Carolina)

Former Ktown TV news anchor Kim Simmons is back, here she is on WNOX 100.3...
