Welcome to the new year, a year of fun radio dial twisting!
There have been too many to name great radio stories about Ktown, from the WIVK ratings dominance to 15Q.
In the spring of '76 W-149 began the morphing process into 15Q. What was happening before the switch at WROL 1490 AM?!
The year started with a great DJ line up-
6-10 Alan Douglas (Sneed), 10-noon Gary Adkins, noon-3p Steve Clark, 3-7p Dave Elrod, 7p-12a Leslie Sheiler, and Loose Bruce overnights.
In West Knoxville on Kingston Pike the Ivanhoe House of Beef was under new ownership and was penned "Basin Street West".
Chris Grabenstein, what an incredible voice, was the weekend DJ at W-149.
The beginning of the future arrived as WBIR 1240 AM went "All News" and had incredible list of on air voices from Dave Foulk to Brad Schultz! Also there were Don Lindsey, Sundra Thompson, Doc Johnston, Carol Utley, Judy Jenkins, Carl Williams...and the list of stars continues.
There was a minor league basketball team floating around (Knoxville Nets) that featured Vols Roger Peltz, Lloyd Richardson, and Vinnie Tracey.
On February 9 of '76 our 101 editor Kurt Roberston (Curtis Knight) celebrated birthday number 18!
Do you remember a great Ktown eatery from back then called the "Bahou"? Hashtag Yummy!
The All-KIL basketball team was announced with my fellow Bearden grad Bert Bertelkamp leading the voting. Also named were Elston Turner, Chris Gettelfinger, and VFL/NFL legend Tim Irwin, yep, he was a hoops star too. The All-KIL women's list was led by Bearden grad and Vols great Holly Warlick.
...and on the last weekend of February several new voices were filtering into the 1490 air waves...Kid Curry, Barry Hodge, Bob "Shotgun" Kelly, Steve West- and soon 15Q aka WKVQ was hatched!
