Claude Tomlinson was the DJ that signed WIVK 860 on the air for the first time way back in 1953. Claude's career scanned several decades until retiring from his "Great Day" morning show in the 90's. In this aircheck not only are sidekicks Lester Longmire and Mr. Schultz present but so is Jim Donovan! This is classic Claude the Cat~

"This is a photograph of Dolly Parton receiving her copy of Great Day in the Morning, autographed by Claude "the cat" Tomlinson, from The World Famous Tony Igar, of WIVK FM. This was photographed by Ted Miller in 1988 in Dolly's dressing room, at the Celebrity Theater at Dollywood. Many will remember that Claude prepared Dolly's demo tape which she took to Nashville after she graduated from High School in Sevierville. There are several chapters in his book featuring Dolly and her time on The Cas Walker Radio Hour and other shows on WIVK."

Thanks to Tony Igar for today's post...101 wants to hear from you too, send your photographs and memories!

In Memory~

Former UT basketball star Don Johnson passed away this week.

My introduction to the radio world came in the Vols '68-'69 basketball season as my transistor radio was always tuned to John Ward and the Vols network on 990 WNOX.

That was an exciting time for the BasketVols...Bill Justus, Jimmy England, Roger Peltz, Coach Stu Aberdeen, Bill Hann, Rudy Kinard, Dickie Johnston, Coach Ray Mears, and of course sophomore starting high post player Don Johnson.

Country music was king in Ktown in 1982 as both WRJZ and WNOX were spinning that format and competing with WIVK...and WNOX was about to debut their new FM sister station..."Kix 95" which was also scheduled for the same format.

In September 1982 WNOX's Program Director was Jerry Howell and their DJ lineup was jam packed with talent-

6-10 Dave Young
10-2 Jim Donovan
2-6 Jimmy Vineyard
6-12 Joe Grant
12-6 Bill Jeffers

As "Kix 95" cranked it up Jimmy Vineyard moved over from WNOX and the line up featured PD Phil Hunt 6-10, Rick Davis 10-3, Jimmy Vineyard 3-7, Doug Bingham 7-12, and Elaine Scott 12-6.

"From 1979 to 1992 I was at WIVK. I saw first hand how that station connected with the Knoxville people. One particular event will always stand out. It was one of those really cold winters in the early 1980's. One the homeless people froze to death in downtown Knoxville. Ed Brantley was doing afternoon drive and got on the air and said how terrible that was. Ed decreed that no one in Knoxville should ever have to go with out coat in the winter. He asked his listeners to bring a coat to the radio station he would see to that no one ever freezes to death in Knoxville. That began WIVK's COATS FOR THE COLD drive. The hundreds of coats delivered by Knoxville people to the radio station was unbelievable. WIVK's Coats for the Cold event, which continued for many years, is just one example of how WIVK touched Knoxville. I have never forgotten the appeal Ed Brantley made to the people, and how they responded.. It made me proud of my association with WIVIK the Frog for almost 14 years."

101 received this article from WIVK's Ed Brantley, it's from Radio Ink!

Happy Birthday wishes to Carson Cooper...Carson grew up within eye sight of the WATO Oak Ridge towers and has been jockeying almost since birth! Carson currently hosts a morning show on Sirius XM's Radio Margaritaville and is on WUSF Tampa!

News Talk...I noticed where WNOX in Ktown keeps rising in the ratings, same here in Orlando where WDBO news/talk is #1. Things keep changing!

Back in 1978 Dan Bell and I were Junior Achievement advisers at WIVK...among our class of champions were Betsy Pickle and Jamey Kerr. Jamey joined Dick Broadcasting shortly thereafter...and 30+ years later Jamey is still with DBC in Greensboro!

101 wants to hear from you, please send your photographs and memories of Ktown Radio!

"Seeing that picture with the WKGN air staff and Phil Michaels, in particular, send me back to 1974 when I was teaching Phil the set up at WCRK Morristown. Michaels was fresh out of high school and brand new to radio. Then he enrolled at UT and took on the gig at "The Famous 1340". Fast forward to 1981 and Music City. I was working at WKOS-FM and got a call from an attorney looking for Buzz Dailey. Turned out to be Phil who had heard me on the air using the other name. He said he instantly knew it was me. That was in '81 and was the last time I heard from Phil Michaels (Kilpatrick). Apparently, he became a successful attorney and never got back into the radio business. I should have taken his cue... Ahh, but hind sight is 20/20!!"

"I just discovered Knoxville Radio 101. Great to see some of the old 'KGN folks. I have fond memories of us all. I'll search my old photos and see if can come up with some. Remember the old Album Rock and Disco 13 days?"

The World Famous Tony Igar (WKGN 1975-1979 With a short interruption at WNOX)

"I’ve got that book around somewhere and when it finds its way to the top of the pile in my office I’ll scan some good stuff for you. It’s a classic! Also, for those of your readers in the K-town area, WBIR’s “Anything is Possible,” hosted by Hal Hill, is featuring Booby Denton in a two-parter. The first part already aired this past Sunday, but the second one will be Sunday at 11 a.m. on Channel 10 and then repeated Monday at 9 p.m. on 10NEWS2."

"Hey George--Just saw Lambert for the first time in about 15 years. I think he was still wearing that leisure suit!! My best to everyone!!!"

101 received this book cover from former WIVK morning DJ Darren Wilhite, thanks! Does anyone have this book? Darren mentioned he thought it was published around 1988.

Oops...101 is a day late and a dollor short (probably two dollars short since we are in a recession)! After posting b'day wishes to Bob Thomas, 101 heard from Tom Jester~

"Chip Emerson always wanted to relive the 60s- now he's there, reliving them forward as of March 1. Don't have a photo, only a cave painting that I can't send."
