101 travels down radio's memory lane with Jerry Howell~
"Hey George...I thought of something that might be interesting for everyone to discuss. Almost all of us started working at a small radio station which meant we had to pull a Sunday board shift with all the live preachers and religious shows. Many of the stories are hilarious and it seems every time I talk to someone about the good old days, this subject comes up. I remember stopping at WBLC one Sunday afternoon and could hear the screaming from inside the radio station as I got out of my car. The preacher was pressed against the window staring into the control room, veins bulging in his neck and railing against the evils of smoking. In the control room was Mike Beach, smoking a big cigar and blowing smoke rings at him. Then there was the time at a radio station in Kentucky...it was about 15 minutes into the show when things hit a fever pitch...somebody brought in the rattlesnakes. Hugh was running the board, went to the parking lot, got his pistol, came back in and shot the snakes. EVERYBODY was in front of the general manager on Monday morning. He was wanting to know why there were snakes and guns in his radio station (the poor secretary was freaking out and threatening to quit, convinced there were snakes in her desk). Monday always found the radio station in a mess with the piano on its back...I never figured out how they could consistently turn over an upright piano...or why. Took us all to stand it back up."
