"Hello from the Old Ladies' Home far across the mountains. I'm getting over quite a scare. Went out last Sunday morning to drive myself to church and found my car vandalized, trashed! Gone were my 8-track and every tape, my spare walking stick, the CB, heater, rear-view mirror (no loss there - don't use it anyway), gas and brake pedals, even the seat, for snaps sake. My heart was almost attacking me. About that time, another old person from the Home happened into the parking lot and asked me what I was doing in the back seat. I hate it when that happens. Anyway, here are some more old people who weren't as such when the pictures were taken." (Lynn Curtis)

It's always fun to find vintage WATO air checks in the 101 Audio Vault. Here's my current Orlando neighbor Jeff Winters...

"Ahhh...Chip brings back so memories of WKGN in the 70s! I knew and worked with them all. Ed Martin and I did the engineering there on Alcoa Highway. I miss those days with Vic the Tune Tycoon! What a guy! The Sales Staff should remember the 7 AM Sales Meetings, so that they could be on the street at 8!" (Buster Sutton)

"George...the salesman Smokey is talking about was Andy Reeves. Andy worked at 'KGN when I started -the sales manager was the terrific Jerry Whitener. Andy left shortly afterwards to become sales manager at the brand new FM - WOKI. Then Creative Displays came to town and bought 'KGN and brought in the ever popular Vic Rumore and his beautiful wife Della. That was a great time in radio -- Beach, Davis, Lambert, Wayne Bernard was the PD when I started, Erwin, Dave Young, Alan Sneed, Joe Anderson (RIP)and many more. Things just aren't the same in radio anymore."(Chip Emerson)

This is great...

"Hi George...Great fun to see my animated overhead view of the WKGN studios back in 1973. I left that as sort of a parting gift to my co-workers when I was transferred to WMAK in Nashville. Each cartoon character is a representation of one of the “Cookin’ KGN” employees. Yes, there was a salesman named Andy who always absconded with the newspaper as he made his morning visit to the men’s room, and yes, Bob Baron frequently played with remote control airplanes (or other toys) in his office. Though the image makes some of it illegible, I remember most of it. Brandon had mentioned he had the original drawing a while back, but this is the first time I have seen it since I drew it. BTW~ after this I abandoned my hopes of becoming a successful cartoonist and decided to stick to radio! "

"I interned at WKGN in 1975 under Joe Anderson. I went by the name "Bill Baker". I'm now a professional photographer in Gilbert, AZ about 25 miles SE of Phoenix. Whatever happened to Joe Anderson? I have heard rumors of his death but no one knows for sure." (Talbert McMullin)www.azdustdevil.com

"I have a snap lid container with "The Sound of the City...CBS.WNOX.990" imprinted on lid. Inside the container is Selected Famous Perfumes packaged in nips. Is there any way I could find out when these were given out/used for advertisement? It appears to be very old. I would appreciate any information you can give me." (Carol Patrick)

In Memory...

The name "Dearstone" has been part of Ktown radio for generations, from Kenny as a DJ at WIVK back in its early days, to Mickey as part of the Dick/Citadel team starting out at WIVK as a country music DJ and evolving into the voice of the Lady Vols and host of Doc, Jeff and Heather on the Sports Animal...today we are saddened to learn that "Mic Dearstone" broadcaster for Citadel and grandson and son of Kenny and Mickey has passed away. I certainly enjoyed listening to him!

May his memory be eternal!

Regarding Saturday's photo of WKGN jocks, 101 heard from Mike Beck~

"Great photo, George! I can name five, I think. Mike Beach and Frank Erwin are the first two from the left, front row. Kerry Lambert (child star, obviously) the 4th person on that row. Top row, Dr. Al Adams, and the guy with the black jacket and white shirt is Butch Brannum. We roomed together in Nashville with a guy named Harold Tipton, who played bass in a band called the Piggies. When are those pointy collars coming back?"

PS...others are, Bob Thomas on front row, and Rick Davis and Phil Michaels on back row!

Re: Knoxville Mystery Hotel and Knoxville Blues

That’s an interesting and complicated mystery. I looked into it a long time ago, and I’ll see if I can remember:

There’s a ref to the Windsor Hotel—that’s what I hear, anyway--allegedly in Knoxville, but also a reference to having recently been on a subway. Which puzzled me. As you may know, subways are rare in Knoxville.

I did some research, a few years ago, and found out the recording was actually made in New York, as many early country recordings were, several years before Nashville’s ascendance as a recording capital.

This is not the only recording of musicians ad-libbing about being in Knoxville when they were actually recording elsewhere. It may be a nod to Knoxville’s reputation for that kind of music, or to Sterchi Brothers Furniture of Knoxville; they were a major sponsor of early country recordings actually cut in New York.

The first time I heard it, it was on an old-time radio show, and was presented as Uncle Dave Macon, with Sam McGee—they were recording together at the time--and I assumed it was Uncle Dave doing the talking.
I tried to look into the reference via the local archives, and found there was no Windsor Hotel in Knoxville in 1926. So for a while I assumed it was just made up, obligatory banter, introductory nonsense, maybe even the name of the hotel in New York where they were staying. But later I learned there had been a Windsor Hotel in Knoxville, back in the 1890s, and it was on Wall Ave., right near Market Square, which was kind of a cauldron of early folk music, fiddling contests, street musicians, etc. Sam McGee probably wouldn’t have been old enough to remember the Windsor, but Uncle Dave would have. I have wondered if it was an homage to a fond memory.
But then again, I can’t prove Uncle Dave was in the room. But he was certainly more talkative and full of himself than the McGees, who probably would have been content to record straight up, as an instrumental.

To complicate matters further, Uncle Dave did make some recordings at the St. James Hotel in 1930 (now lost, I think); it was on the same block as the old Windsor, hardly a fruit-jar’s throw away.

Back in the mid 70's WETE DJ Jim Humphries became radio's iron man by staying on the air for over 200 consecutive hours! Did you know his brother Ben (Clifton) was also a DJ at WETE? Here's Ben from 1975~

Dr. Al cured "hear aches", here's Al Adams on WKGN~

From the 101 inbox...

"First, I LOVE the blog. It's amazing to hear the stories of what used to happen, it seems these days that radio isn't as wild as the days you describe. And that's a real shame. Anyway, I was telling my mother about this site and she had given me a story or two as well. but here's where my curiosity got me. I'm going on a limb for this, but my great-uncle may have worked in the Knoxville market in the early 70's. From what I got, he worked at WIVK or WOKI, does the name John Irons ring a bell to anyone?" (Charles Hompesch)

More great stuff from Terry Ruth~

"George..If Brian Stevens sends in the EAST TENN FORD radio spot, here is a pix you can put with it. They had 2 or 3 cars on the NASCAR circuit back then. This is the one year KING RICHARD PETTY drove, a FORD. Now they have started back this year. That back fender is the first thing I thought of when I heard Petty was back with Ford. We would go out to the dealership on Clinton Hwy to see the race cars. There would almost always have a... radio remote.... going under a tent with the broadcast fed through a phone line as I recall. Thanks for the memories."

Lots of folks in the 101 inbox today...

"First, great blog/website. I've been going through some old cassettes from the mid 70s transferring to CD. Came across a spot break I believe is from WOKI in the summer of 1975. It includes an East Tennessee Ford :60, complete with jingle. The female vocalist sounds familiar. Reba, perhaps? But a very young Reba, if that's the case. Do you -or does anyone-know who the vocalist was on the old "talk of the town" jingle E. Tn Ford used in the 70s? Thanks." (Brian Stevens)

"I have already been in the process of building a DJ reunion weekend. If you want to post it here, you can have former jocks keep reading your column AND write me @ jeff_jarnigan@comcast.net. Planning on mid to late summer. We will need MP3 air checks and copies of any jingle packages available." (Jeff Jarnigan)

"My name is Scott Shelton, and I am a former news kid at WETE. It started as a practicum assignment for a broadcasting course at UT, but it turned into a paying gig when they gave me the morning drive news anchor slot. The only thing I have left from those days is a couple of orange and white WETE bumper stickers with the UT football "logo" imprinted. Was that on Magnolia Boulevard? And I remember we claimed "We're East Tennessee's Entertainment!" Since then I have always loved getting up around 3:30 AM! So many familiar names are on this board, and the photos are a real blessing to me. Knoxville radio was THE BEST in the early to mid-seventies and I just want to shout out to all the vets that I LOVE ya and I MISS ya and I wish all of you the best. Feel free to contact me - I'm in Clarksville, out of the radio biz but working at something!" (Scott Shelton) wsshelton@bellsouth.net
