Knoxville Radio History will be alive and kickin' next week~

FIVE OF KNOXVILLE’S LEGENDARY RADIO ANNOUNCERS TO DJ MIDDAY SHOWS ON MERLE 96.7 JULY 2 – 5

Knoxville, TN -- Merle 96.7 station owner Ron Meredith announced today that, as vacation fill-in for Uncle Phil (Phil Jarnagin) the week of July 2, five of Knoxville’s legendary radio announcers will fill in on the 10am to 3pm airshift. “Phil and I were discussing his vacation relief recently and came up with a wish list of people we would love to have on Merle.” Said Meredith, “We quickly named more than half a dozen people who would be great for the job. It became obvious that the best solution was to ask one each day.” Scheduled to do the midday show next week are:

--Dan Bell, Monday July 2. With a radio career spanning more than 40 years, Bell was ‘The Eye in The Sky’ and hosted the Sunday Survey show on WIVK. He also hosted a radio show on Dolly’s radio station at Dollywood for ten years. Dan is proud that he kept personal contact with many of the country artists he played on his radio shows, and talked about the behind-the-scenes information that, in those days, could only be found by picking up the phone and talking directly with an artist.

--Brother Clay, Tuesday July 3. Clay served his country in Vietnam, is a graduate of The University of Tennessee, and was Music Director of W-149, Knoxville’s first progressive rock radio station. He has worked in major radio markets around the country including Atlanta, Denver, Houston, and Miami. While in Houston, he was credited as the first DJ to introduce The Police’s ‘Roxanne’ to The U.S. In addition to W-149, Brother Clay has worked in Knoxville at WKGN and I-100.

--Your Dave Young, Wednesday July 4. Dave started his radio career at WBNT in Oneida and shortly thereafter made the transition to Knoxville, working at The Big 99 WNOX in 1968, moving to WKGN in 1973. In 1975 he joined WIVK, where he created the frog mascot, worked middays and afternoon, and fill-in for Claude Tomlinson.

--Walker Johnson, Thursday July 5. Walker Johnson started in radio at WGAP in Maryville in 1970. Over the next 32 years Walker worked at various stations in Knoxville and when the one he was working for in 1975 was sold, the morning man, Curtis Parham talked the new owners into keeping himself and Walker. The CP and Walker Show became Knoxville’s top rated morning show on the new station, WRJZ. WGAP is now owned by Ron Meredith and is a sister station of Merle 96.7

--Bill Miller aka Suitcase Simpson, Friday July 6. Bill has enjoyed a long radio career with WIVK, U102, and other Knoxville stations. His resume includes successful stints at top rated stations in Chattanooga, Indianapolis, Charlotte, Oklahoma City, and Tampa Bay. He currently produces and hosts the ''Bluegrass Gospel USA!'' show for stations in New Zealand and the USA, including Merle FM sister stations WYSH and WGAP.

“Merle 96.7 not only plays current country songs,” says Meredith, “we also find ourselves in the fortunate position of being the only Knoxville country music FM that plays Willie, Waylon, Hank, and George Jones every day. We’ve worked hard to build Merle into a great sounding station. With the addition this year of 2009 CMA Radio Personality of the Year Jack Ryan, many thousands of more listeners have tuned in. They like what they’re hearing, and they’re sticking with us. 2012 is turning out to be a record year for Merle FM, and next week’s guest announcers are giving this staff five more reasons to be eager to come to work every day.”

101 travels to August 1979 in Ktown...

On the TV side Action 10 News debuted Sunday Night News with Judy Jenkins.

The #1 song on WIVK's Sound of the 70's Survey was "Suspicions" by Eddie Rabbitt.

Drive time at WNOX 990 featured Dr. Dave Dunaway in the morning and Scott Majors afternoons.

Rock 104 was born, still with WBIR call letters, the moniker was "We Believe In Rock".

Carson Cooper was doing the overnight show at Rock 104.

Phil More was working at WNOX as Michael Jackson.

Morning ratings in Ktown showed Claude Tomlinson #1 followed by CP and Walker, Johnny Pirkle, and Dunaway.

WIVK had Jerry Lee Lewis scheduled to headline the August 25 shindig, he cancelled so Con Hunley stepped in and stepped up!

Suitcase Simpson was PD and afternoon drive at WKGN Disco 13!

Where were you in August '79?

Happy Hump Day from Saint George Island on the Florida panhandle...

If you were in Ktown in the late 60's, I'm sure you remember Sir Bernard on WNOX 990~

"Belated birthday greetings to Eddie Beacon from a couple of old friends from their time in Knoxville. Sir Bernard and his sister Pauline, both back home in the Isle of Man. Eddie, if you want to play “catch-up” email bjq@manx.net"

For you technocrats...The 101 Audio Vaults must now be 250 x 250 in size, Blogger is not set up for audio, so I actually convert from video. I am now working backwards to resize all clips, but it will be a process. If you look at an old post and the audio does not play, email 101 at KtownRadio@gmail.com and I'll get that post quickly restored, cheers!

Happy Tuesday...Here's a 101 Reload featuring Steve Harrison...

"In 1976 I was doing mornings at WROA in Gulfport, MS., WRNO New Orleans, heard me and offered me a job. Took it. WNOE-FM New Orleans had this famous New Orleans Disc Jockey Buzz Bennett who asked me to come talk to him over a beer. Went to the quarter and had a beer. Came back to work at WRNO and got fired for talking to the opposition. Yep its true! February of 1977 I went to KSTT in Davenport, Iowa to a work for Dr. Don Michaels who did music and afternoons at WROA in Gulfport while I was there. Did promos for the station. My promos were good and did mornings and KSTT had a #1 12+ in am drive. Went to WKY in Oklahoma City and later worked at U-102 in Knoxville when it opened in 1981. Mornings were Dave Dunaway and Colvin Idol, Tom Van Hart did middays, Bill Burkett did afternoons, Mick St. John did the late afternoon shift and I did 7pm-Midnite and enjoyed some of the best work I ever did. That station did live liners for promos, sort of an album oriented rock approach to Adult Contemporary. By Fall 1982 our numbers were really good. Part of the staff moved to Nashville where we tried to duplicate the success of U-102 at Y-107 and got waxed by WLAC-FM at 106.7. No one ever made the effort to dial down to 107.7. We were toast. Went to KLOL in Houston Texas and came back to Ktown and did mornings at WNOX with Paul Oscar Anderson. Then I got out of radio and took up sales and brought up our two kids who are marvelous young people going to Grad School!" (Steve Harrison)

101 first worked with Eddie Beacon in 1982 when WRJZ had flipped to country and Eddie was handling middays! That was one fun time...Ernie Baker, David Henley, Steve Bridgewater, Jessica James, Martin Baker, Bill Beason, Bob Ziegler etc...good sounding radio!

Eddie is still on the air...he's scanned from WNOX in the 60's to WNOX today...

Happy Birthday "Swingin' Deacon"!!

Page 3...101 is working to correct the 101 Audio Vault issues, hopefully stay tuned!

Happy Birthday to Dan Bell...

Dan joined WIVK in the 70's as a member of the news department and parlayed his wit and wisdom into hosting a very popular countdown show each week known as "The Sunday Survey". Dan was fast on his feet, interviewing the stars and detailing music trends!

Dan is still around and you can find him on Facebook!!!
