One of the great things about living in Florida is being able to listen to beach music, ala oldies on Sunny 1059 and Ktown's Mike Beach! Mike is the swing DJ at Sunny...the station sounds great and the DJs are live, not voice tracked. Mike filled in this morning for PD Rick Stacy.

Today we unlock the 101 Audio Vault and enjoy an I-100 sweeper...

Did you have a radio mentor when you jumped into the biz?

Your Dave Young took me under his wing when I was hired as an 18 year old UT freshman to work as a weekend DJ at WIVK! Dave still sounds great...

Here's the 101 Audio Vault from Merle-FM...

Happy Weekend, here's a 101 Reload~

"It was April 1st 1991! Wilhite and Wall replaced the legendary Claude the Cat. We always said they picked that date so if we really sucked they could say "Nah, that's just an April Fool's joke, the new morning show will be here in a few weeks!" Our 6+ years at WIVK were some of the best times we ever had in radio. Bobby Denton was terrific and Les Acree taught us how to do a real morning show. We had a lot of help from Channing Smith, Mike Keith, Tonya Stout Brown, Hallerin Hill, Bob Thomas, Ed Brantley, Dave Foulk, Jan Oliver, Terry Womack, Ed Rupp and especially Your Dave Young who took us under his wing/pit, gave us his support and made sure we knew the history of Knoxville radio." The 101 Audio Vault features Brother Clay~

Picture this~ lazy Sunday afternoon and Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" on the radio with Mike Beach spinning the hits, wow, 1975 was a great year...but, that's what I heard in Orlando on Sunday! That's right, The Beachman is back and part of a great radio station known as Sunny 1059!

What a treat! Big thanks to Merle-FM for allowing us to time travel back to the radio days of Dan Bell, Brother Clay, Your Dave Young, Walker Johnson, and Suitcase Simpson. Last week these five each took a turn behind the midday microphone on Merle!

Happy 4th of July!

Are you enjoying the fireworks on Merle-FM this week? Today at 10 Your Dave Young will be back on the air, tune in, I am!

From the 101 InBox~

"I've just discovered your web site. Back in the early 1960s while a student at Maryville College I listened mostly to WATE but also to WNOX and WGAP. An evening announcer at WATE was a UT graduate student named Wayne Perkey. After finishing his degree Wayne went on to 50,000 watt, clear channel WHAS in Louisville where he did the morning wake-up show for 30 some years as well as some television. He retired a number of years ago but does/did (I'm not up to date) a shift at an oldies FM station. While at WATE by station policy he did not accept music requests. However, at the end of my second year in college I wrote to him and asked if he would play such and such a song at a particular time one evening since it was a favorite of my girlfriend (now my wife of almost 47 years) and me. Wayne did play it saying it was for a student and his girlfriend at Maryville College who would be apart for the summer. It was much appreciated. When moved to Louisville I knew Wayne and mentioned it to him. He did not remember, but I will always remember his kindness." (Ken Macharg)
