101 goes local for one day!

Jim Turner has been on the air in Orlando for 40 years...12 as afternoon and for the past 28 as morning personality! Where were you in '72?

WDBO is a very good sounding COX news talk station anchored each morning beginning with Turner...he has announced he is retiring soon.

They don't make 'em like that anymore!!! Kudos!

...a taste of MRB from the early WOKI FM 100 days (101 Audio Vault)~

Today we open the 101 InBox and read from Buster Sutton and Chris Campbell...

"Some of my favorite engineering mentors are: Carl Lawson, Jack Rockwell and Murphy Brown at WTVK and Bob Engert and Lemuel Stephens at WNOX 990. From my teenage years: Lee Wyrick and John R. Blair. All but one are now deceased. To these I owe much!" (Buster Sutton)

"George, what happened to all of the jingle packages after the stations went bust? Like WNOX, WKGN, WRJZ, etc. Heard some of them back in 1982 reunion at the former Hyatt here in Knoxville.   Also, could somebody explain the clock system they had at WNOX in the 70's? I went on tour there in 1976, before any digital clocks - seemed like they were photography clocks - they had magnets to place on the clock where the hit points were." (Chris Campbell)

Did you have a favorite engineer in Ktown? Milton Jones was a legend at WIVK and 101 heard from another of the greats...

"George: Read the story about me in yesterday's edition. I'm alive and well and still doing engineering! I'll turn 72 tomorrow, October 14! I live in Sweetwater and Tellico Plains, Tennessee. My email is EOSutton@aol.com. Phone is 865-805-4779. Love to read the blog! I recall something funny that happened to almost every name mentioned!! I love everyone in broadcasting, especially the DJs, who I always have to work around. Regards"...Ernest (Buster) Sutton

"Hello George...a nurse at work mentioned she saw my name on 'some radio site'. She wondered about me. I do the same myself, sometimes. We don't know each other, but I visited your blog site and was excited to find lots of familiar names and some voices. Oh, this is Carson Hutchison (King in the Morning). I had no idea anyone had any of the old radio stuff. How great it would be to hear some old air checks from those days. Do you know of anyone who has a collection? Some Eddy Roy and even some of myself! Seems a shame to have come from those days without even a phone-bit on tape. But that's the way it turned out. Hope to hear from you if you have the time. Thanks for your efforts" (Carson)

Happy Friday...from time to time we reload our juke box here at 101 and it's time for another classic story from 500 Mega Watts!

Enjoy today's 101 Reload~

"Normally I guess we never talk much about engineers. Never on the air and always involved in the technical. But……..I know a lot of people will remember Ernie “Buster” Sutton. He did the engineer thing at WTVK, WKGN, WOKI and no telling where else. He also taught at the Professional Academy of Broadcasting. His treatise on amplifiers, applefryers and rectumfryers was one the funniest things I have ever heard. I have no idea where Buster is today, but I feel certain many folks will have a good laugh recalling some of Busters many activities over the years."

"One night after I finished my air shift at W*** I went over to visit Terry. After a while – more like several hours Claude “The Cat” came in for his morning show. This was when he still ran his own board. Claude apparently noticed us before we saw him. While he was out in the hallway he did a voice of an old lady which scared the crap out of us both. It was a good laugh for us all but something about that voice stuck in my mind. I had heard Claude do Lester and Old Man Schultz but this female voice. It was much later that I learned (though a daughter of Claude’s), that he did the voice of Granny Loomis – of Country Sausage commercials. I often wonder if Claude’s talents were fully known by his loyal listeners."

WOKI FM 100 was one of the early voice track music stations, I recall the term was "automation" back in the day.

The original night DJ at WOKI was MRB (Mike Beverly), here's Mike on the 101 Audio Vault...
