Happy Good Friday...our 101 Reload is from the only and only Suitcase Simpson~

"Here's a long story you can use when you need one, George. My second shortest radio gig was at Top 40 WTAL in Tallahassee, FL. In early 1971, when I was only 20, I was hired to do mornings there by new PD Ross (The Boss Hoss) Brooks (who later programmed country WNOX and was a fixture for years in Nashville doing PM Drive at WLAC). I drove up to the building on Phillips Drive and remember stopping in the driveway to stare at an American flag painted over the entire front side of the building. Remember, this was at the height of the Vietnam War. Most rock stations were playing anti-war songs, not waving flags. Turns out that the local owner was a bona fide member of the John Birch Society. I looked at the playlist and noticed no songs by Aretha, The Four Tops, Temptations, etc. I asked Ross why and he said the owner didn't want us to play records by black artists. My first morning on the air, the owner called at 6:15 and ordered me to change my on-air name - Brother Lee Love. He felt it had "racial overtones." The owner also had a system of fines for everything from stumbling on the air to saying something he didn't like. I was hit with a hefty fine for starting the pre-recorded Paul Harvey Show late, another big one when a tape machine broke on my air shift through no fault of my own, and a couple of dozen minor fines. After two days, I owed the station more than I had earned so I quit. Ross said that if I would hang around town a few days, we could ride back to Tennessee together. He wanted to quit but knew it would be difficult to get his check unless he waited until payday. About a week later, Brother Ross was fired for trying to sneak a Dionne Warwicke record into the rotation. Brother Ross & I remained good friends until his death. I had to appeal to the Florida Board of Labor before I received a check many months later." (Suitcase Simpson)

It's a 101 Reload...we heard from Suitcase back in July '11~

"Played golf with my brother and his 12 year old son last week at Whittle Springs. We stopped at the old WNOX building and took a look around. It's dilapidated now, but it was a showplace 50 years ago. I wanted my nephew to see some of his grandfather's work. My father, Clyde Miller, was a foreman on that job for the George W. Reagan Construction Company. The irony is that I worked for all the legendary radio stations in town - except WNOX. I was only a visitor in the building that my father built. By the way, Billy Casper Golf now runs Whittle Springs Golf Course and they've done a fine job with the grounds. A big, new pond on the back nine adds a new dimension to playing the course."

Best Wishes,
Bill Miller

101 opens up our InBox, regarding on air names...

"I offered to use an alias when I first went to work for WIVK (Dick Broadcasting) since they had one Bell there, Traffic Sgt. Wayne Bell...but Jim Dick said no...only criminals use aliases, or something like that...I love to tell the story one night Wayne and I were at a party, and talking to each other, when a pretty young lady came up and asked me if I were related  to Wayne. I said "yes, he's my father, and this is him right here" If he had had his gun that night, he probably would have shot me. He does have a son named Dan or Danny...last I heard of him he was in the newspaper business in Lenoir City." (Dan Bell)

"George...Not a Knoxville name but one of the best I have ever heard. I think the guy was near Naples FL. I believe his real name was Dick Tyler...and on the air.....he called himself "Swingin' Dick". Always thought that was one of the all time great ones! LOL" (MB~Mike Beach)

What's in a name?

Did you use an on air name versus your real name?

True story...buddy of mine in Orlando has been a radio exec for years, his name is Kim Mcfadden and he worked with Fleetwood Gruver for years. One day he asked Fleetwood, and I'm paraphrasing..."love your radio name but you've never told me your God given name? Duh says Fleetwood...that is my name!!!"

Some Ktown fun names (but not their real names)...Dr Al Adams, Smokey Burns, Sonny Knight, Suitcase Simpson, Jack Diamond, Little Alf, The Aardvark, Jamie Rivers, Jeff Stevens, Gary Drake, Jack Ryan, Jeff Winters, John E Douglas, Hoss, Dick Winstead, Eddie Beacon, Dr Don West, JJ Scott, Robin Beck...and how about Tollie Michaels~

Radio blogging is a fun hobby for 101 as is photography...flying home to Orlando from Washington DC I shot this with my iphone5, look closely and you'll see the Daytona International Speedway, vroom!

101 wants to hear from you...send your photographs and memories and vote for Janelle Arthur too while you are at it!

Local radio sounds best when local personalities are behind the mics.

In this day and age I can dial twist stations around the world...

It's good to have two voices in the morning that have been around for decades, Ed and Bob on WNOX, their intro is featured in today's 101 Audio Vault~

Remember when there was only one? The 101 Audio Vault features this classic jingle~

From the 101 InBox...

"Hi! Just lucked into finding this blog. My email address is oranelrod@bellsouth.net. I’m just sitting here recovering from rotator cuff surgery. I started working in Knoxville a long time ago at WBIR back when “A Date with Doc” was still on the air. From there I went to W149, WKGN, and Rock 104. I traveled with Alan Sneed to WKDF/WKDA in Nashville and on to 96 Rock in Atlanta. Later I worked for WUSY Chattanooga and finally WGAP Maryville. I returned to college and got a BS degree, and currently work for AT&T. Oh, the stories I could tell, if I could only remember them." (Dave Elrod)

Happy Birthday to Bill Beason...do you know what Bill's radio name was when he worked in Nashville?

..."Buzz Daily"

From the 101 InBox~

Where were you in '73..."Playing The World Famous Tony Igar doing PM drive and morning sales, at WNPT Tuscaloosa with Vic Rumore as GM and Mornng Drive. This preceded the Tennessee invasion to WKGN in the mid 70's. Vic went to GM at WKGN when Creative bought the station from Moody and brought me over a year later. The rest is history. I got to work with so many Ktown legends at WKGN back then, but who knew?" (Tony Igar)

101 heard from Jack Diamond..."Ha! That was a much younger me. By the way it was Jerry Steele. So, whatever happened to Jim Goodman and Chris Hampton?" (Jack aka Coyote)

From Isaac Young..."I came across your website and saw you had a small bit on a dj in 1966 named Bill Jeffers. My grandfather was a good friend of Bill's and I was wondering if you had any more photographs or audio clips you could pass along, as my grandfather is suffering from Alzheimer's and old memories help him start talking and, obviously, it would be fun for him as well. He recognized that name and photo as an old friend and I thought I would try contacting you. Thank you."
