Hi George...
I thought it appropriate that I become a NEW Dad on Father's Day. I am launching Global Radio Daytona. The app can be downloaded at your store.
First...I said to myself- let's dispense with all the rules, No consultants, no PDs or corporations to tell me "what" an audience can say or do. NO RULES!
This is a stream of music forgotten by all of commercial radio. I worked on the playlist for almost a year. I will take full responsibility for you saying...sh@t I haven't heard that in years! You will find ALL the music holds up really well. The website is globalradiodaytona.com.
Oh, and starting Monday I will be doing 3-5p LIVE everyday. The station is 24/7 with sweepers and NO commercials. Please pass the word along, and thanks to all of you.
Happy Father's Day...Enjoy!

Ed Brantley 2020 Living Legend...
Ed joins Eddie Beacon as our two recipients of the 2020 Living Legend Award.
Ed was on the radio and in management at WIVK in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, and then when you thought he rode off in to the sunset (to his farm in Lenoir City) he paired up with Bob Thomas to create East Tennessee's top rated morning talk show- The Ed and Bob Show on then WNOX FM 100.3. I even visited and was on the air with them back in late 2010.
Among Ed's many humanitarian acts thru the years was his idea of "Coats for the Cold"!
These days Ed is at home bailing hay, just kidding...he's still behind the microphone cohosting The Ed and Bob Show!
Happy Father's Day Ed!
Eddie Beacon 2020 Living Legend...
Introducing the 2020 Living Legend Award...Eddie Beacon "The Swingin' Deacon"!!!
I'm not sure what dial position that Eddie has not occupied during his wall of fame career in East Tennessee.
I was honored to team up with Eddie and Jimmy Vineyard starting back in 2010 to host a weekly racing show called Bumper2Bumper on the then WNOX-FM 100.3, owned and operated by our first Living Legend Award recipient Johnny Pirkle.
Eddie's career goes back to his working at the transmitter days for WNOX 990 to WKGN to W149 to 15Q to...well the list goes on!
I got to work with Eddie at Q94 in Oak Ridge in '81, he cohosted mornings with Linda Scott. Then the next year he and I joined 62 WRJZ when the station played country music.
Did you work with Eddie? 101 would love to hear from you at ktownradio@gmail.com.
Here are (some) of the stations where Eddie shared his insegrevious talent...WLIL, WNOX, WCPH, WPXI, WAAY, WGYW, WJBE, WKGN, WORD, WIMO, W149, 15Q, WROL, WRJZ, WTNQ, WATO, KGAL, WMFJ, NewsTalk 100.3, WSEV, WDLY, WBMK.
PS...for those of you holding your breath for all these decades wondering, Eddie was born Clay Huskisson!

15Q is gonna make me rich!
These classic photos are of Bob Thomas on the air at 15Q (WKVQ 1490). The station's story is well documented!
15Q lasted for most of 1976, that was it...Bob sandwiched the station in between WKGN 1340 working with Dr Al Adams, Mike Beach, and company and WIVK, where he joined in the summer of 1977. Bob went on to have the top ranked midday show in the USA for decades.
You can still enjoy Bob via The Ed and Bob Show, Happy Father's Day Bob!

Oregon not Tennessee
Did you know that Eddie Beacon was a DJ in Lebanon...Oregon?
It was '72 and Eddie was on middays at 92-KGAL The Rock of the Valley!
The morning show was hosted by Jerry Vance, Eddie was middays and afternoon drive was PD Jim Edwards aka Dick Poirier.
The 101 world wants to know...Eddie, how did you find yourself in Oregon?
The good news is Eddie soon returned to East Tennessee!
PS- Eddie also spent time in Florida at WMFJ in Daytona, I wonder if he attended the Daytona 500 that year?

We heard from Kerry Lambert after the 101 Audio Vault featured him- "I shared with my kids and told them I used to be pretty cool (ha). Thanks for the mention. Hard to believe it's been 40 years since we launched WIMZ. Very proud that they're still rockin'. Amazing that some of the personalities I hired are still there. Have a great day George."

Kerry Lambert got his start at WKGN 1340...it was the mid 70's. His first on air name was Chris Lee.
After WKGN Kerry had a long stint on the air and as an executive at WIMZ.
Fast forward and Kerry landed in Birmingham with Dick Broadcasting, and he's still in B'ham these days.
The 101 Audio Vault features Kerry as Keith Lambert on Album Rock 'KGN in 1978-

Robert Murphy
Ktown was lucky to have George Mooney and Mooney Broadcasting! In the early years George was the Voice of the Vols. Later came WKGN 1340!
Mooney Broadcasting added WMAK in Nashville and that station became a gateway for many talented WKGN jocks to migrate to a larger radio market.
Smokey Burns was a great morning DJ at WKGN (superb on air name)...but Nashville came calling and he joined PD Scott Shannon at WMAK and the birth of Murphy in the Morning occurred. He carried that moniker throughout his broadcast career!

I asked Possum Riley what was the DJ line up when he arrived at WKGN..
I arrived at WKGN in August of 1969 to take the 9a-12p show. Sonny Knight was doing mornings, Don Smith was on noon-3, Skip Broussard handled 3-6p in addition to being the PD. Eddie Beacon was the night jock and Steve Remmel did overnights. Sonny's younger brother- who went by Kevin Young- did weekends. Allen Pressley was the morning newsman.
When Broussard left for WMPS Memphis in early 1970, he recommended Ted Ferguson out of Baton Rouge to replace himself in PM drive. I became PD and hired Ted. Skip later went from WMPS to WKNR (Keener) in Detroit. When Don left, I hired Loren Owens out of Terre Haute to do mornings, moving Sonny to middays. We named Loren "Jefferson Kaye". A couple of years later I hired him out of WKGN to do mornings for me on WEBR in Buffalo. Loren went on to have a great career- WGAR in Cleveland, KIMN in Denver and then to Boston. He retired earlier this year from WROR-FM. Another hire I was proud of was Jim Dearman from WATE, who did news for WKGN and then went to Mooney's WMAK in Nashville as a newsman and foil for the morning jock. That may have been Russ Spooner.
That little station was an absolute powerhouse of talent!
thanks for hangin'
Possum

Ktown radio these days...
If you are like me, these days when listening to the wonderful world of radio I always ask myself is that DJ live in the studio or voice tracked?
Several years back I traveled to Panama City for work. I stopped in to say hello to my WIVK friend from days gone by, Jimmy Vineyard. Jimmy was GM of a group of stations there. We said hello and laughed at how time had flown past us, first time seeing each other in about 30 ageless years! It was around 11am so the 5 midday shows were on the air. We toured the small studios...no DJ was to be found, all 5 stations were voice tracking or syndicated during the midday slot. Oh well, modern technology I guess!
Yesterday I jumped on to the WIVK website and listened to the station...here's their current line-up-
530 Tony and Kris
10 Jennifer Alexander
1 Rich Bailey (PD)
3 Gunner
7 Mac
12 Blair Garner
And a shoutout to @TonyWIVK (Tony Randall), we follow each other on Twitter. My handle is @talkgeorge
