Remembering Les Acree~

Paul Lyle shares memories of Les with 101...

Former PD at WIVK. WKDA Nashville, WMC Memphis and numerous other stations. Helped Kenny Chesney immensely. Inducted last year into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame. Great guy that I worked with at WKDA. Knew every record guy in six states. Big Vol Fan.

I was a sales person at WKDA and Les grabbed me one day and said, “Don’t you have a four door car?” I replied yes I did. “I need you to drive to lunch today. We’re picking up a record guy and he’s got this new singer with him we’re playing her record. Can you drive and you can have lunch with us.”  I said of course sound great. So Les and I drove over to Music Row and the record guy and girl came out and jumped in the back seat. I turned around and she stuck out her hand and said “HiDee I’m Reba McIntyre.” I said Welcome to Nashville and we had lunch. I wonder if she ever made it!!!!!

NEWZ from 101 Ace Reporter Johnny Pirkle~

This image was posted as "WIVK Gang", but I recognized many of the folks as local musicians and investigated. I looked up (ran into actually) bass virtuoso Ray Rose (the guy in the spectacles in the center), who gave me this partial roster. Front- Corall Sands, Program Director Mike Hanes and an unidentified woman. Standing- Curtis Young (later to be in the Jordanaires) Bill "Stoney" Stonecipher, Joe Ridings, fiddler Jerry Moore, Rose, Bob Robertson, Fred Smith (of Red & Fred fame), Frank Robert, guitarist Bruce (last name forgotten), an unidentified fellow, and Jim McGinnis. This crew was on their to a gig at Brushy Mountain Prison when someone took this shot. It is not known how many returned!!

Radio Guys Go TV (and more!)...

Bob Kesling and Scott Sams both go way back with 101...

I met Scott Sams in the summer of '76 when he stopped by WBLC in Lenoir City where I was a DJ, he had worked there the year before. We went on to be fast friends. Scott became a sports and news anchor on the telly, first in Ktown and then for decades in Dallas. Scott was the Vols Pride of Southland PA announcer for years.

When I joined WIVK as a weekend DJ in the fall of '76, Bob was a sports reporter and anchor, and he drove a classic or vintage beat up green car. Bob went on to TV land at WBIR and the rest is Big Orange history...

The late 70's was the post Eddy Roy (PD) era at WNOX 990...but the station was still Top 40 and still sounding great.

Bill Beason (photo) with his booming voice was manning the over night show when the station was programmed by Scotter McLeod.

...and there was a host of big names~ Dave Dunaway, Phil Williams, Mike Beach, Larry Steele, James Maurice, and Colvin Idol.

Bill worked at several Ktown dial positions and even ventured to Nashville as a morning DJ with the moniker "Buzz Daily"!

The year was 1973 and WKGN was presenting "The History of Rock and Radio"...

I was a student at Bearden Junior High and already had my eye set on broadcasting for a career. Picture the excitement when the WKGN DJs visited and made this presentation!!!

Do you remember these disc jockeys? Where are they today?

Page 3...

Did anyone help jump start Your radio career? 4 me it was "Your Dave Young". That summer day back in '76 when I stopped in at WIVK on Bearden Hill to drop off an air check to Bobby Denton, Your Dave happened to be sitting in for Booby. I was escorted back to the control, made my introduction and reacquainting "hello remember me?"...I left my air check and resume, no doubt it was properly delivered as I was soon hired as a weekender at WIVK and YDY took me under his wings!

I've been looking for a better name for our 101 Wall of Fame so (the light bulb went bright), going forward the 101 Wall of Fame will be renamed, in recognition of the one individual who helped a young man's radio dream come true...it's time to vote for the new members~

One of the greats to come thru Ktown was Paul Oscar Anderson...I first remember him  teaming up with Eddy Roy in AM drive on WNOX.

The 101 Audio Vault features POA at WKGN with his daily talk show, late 70's!

Squeezed in between Top 40 and Disco was an AOR format at WKGN 1340 in the late 70's. Two West High grabs were part of the air patrol...Mike Beck and Kerry Lambert, they both are still in the biz!

The 101 Audio Vault features "Keith Lambert"~

"Hi George. To clarify a bit, Clifford Jennings is still the owner of WQLA. We have filed to transfer it to my company and are awaiting FCC approval. The station was about a month away from being permanently deleted so I helped Cliff get it back on and then am helping him keep it going until FCC approval. It's just another milestone in my ridiculously expensive hobby of saving dead and dying small town AM's. When this one closes, I will own four. Anyone want one cheap? Plus I still work forty hours a week for South Central soon to be Midwest Communications on the hill in Knoxville. I guess I'm one of the small handful of 70's folks still making a living at this business. Which is good, because I have absolutely no other marketable skills." (Mike Beverly)
