The Life and Times of Your Dave Young...

If you grew up in Knoxville in the 70's and loved the radio, you were surely touched by the voice and personality of Your Dave Young!

I first recall Dave as afternoon personality at WNOX followed by his Dave Young Morning Show on WKGN with news anchor Joe Anderson and finally as a huge personality at WIVK for many years.

As I was an 18 year old in 1976 and about to start at UT, Dave helped open the door for me to become a weekend DJ at WIVK...the radio time of my life, I got to work with the legends of the East Tennessee airwaves!

Thanks again Dave and Happy 65th birthday!!!

Happy Birthday Jeff Jacoby!

Happy Monday and congrats to our men's basketball team for making the "sweet sixteen", Go Vols!!!

101 is featuring some great bantering from our 101 Facebook page regarding the 97.5 dial position!

Kent Teffetelle~ a classic back in the day. Originally more valuable for it's SCA (which is what the station was built for) than it's main channel. I remember when WEZK FM 97 only had a top of the hour ID and was straight music otherwise.

Doug Hullander~ Kent, when I worked there in the 80's, we had 15 minute continuous music blocks (no jock comments ). We were allowed to crack the mic ONLY at quarter hour intervals. Not very exciting radio, but then again the stress level was non existent. The air shifts were soo EZ.

Kent Teffetelle~ Indeed, just keep the Scully 270 playback machines loaded with fresh reels mainly.

Doug Hullander~ That's it. I was there when they dropped BM and became B 97.5 and was thrilled that I was finally allowed to actually be a "jock".

Mike Clark~ I was there from '75-'79. I remember going into the top of the hour you'd fade out of the music, do a live forecast, then hit the AP news. The network had a long alert tone that started at :40 and ran for ten seconds, then a short one right before the cast started. The radio station also had a top of hour tone that actually went out over the air. You did not want to pot up the network before their short alert tone!

When WRJZ went on the air in the fall of '76 Tim Edwards was the afternoon DJ...in the fall of '81 when WRJZ flipped to a country format, Tim was the PD, for a few minutes anyway. 101 happened to air check his last show...

The fall of 1981...

WRJZ had not yet flipped to a country format and featured CP 6-10, Eddie Beacon 10-3, Tim Edwards 3-7, Bob Ziegler 7-12, and Martin Baker 12-6. Dr Don West soon joined as PD and morning DJ and Jessica James was added as afternoon drive...Beacon, Ziegler, and Baker remained in place when the station flipped formats.

Over at WNOX 990 Jay Michaels was PD and the line up was Phil Williams 530-10, Gary Beach 10-2, Bill Evans 2-6, Jim Donovan 6-10, Jeff Shannon 10-2, and James Maurice 2-6. Phil Williams had returned to WNOX from U-102.

WIVK seldom changed on air personalities and all these names are still very well known...Claude Tomlinson 6-10, Bob Thomas 10-3, Ed Brantley 3-7, Mickey Dearstone 7-12, and Terry Womack 12-6.

Speaking of U-102, WMYU, Bill Burkett was PD and the afternoon DJ~ Dr Dave Dunaway 6-10, Mick St John 10-3, Burkett 3-7, Steve Harrison 7-12, and Tom Van Hart 12-6.

Where were you in '81?

Saturday, March 15, 2014

It was the summer of '81 and WOKI-FM was booming their 100000 watts throughout the southland...and with great sounding jocks.

On the air at that time~ Mike Beverly, Chuck Edwards, Rich Randall, Fast Eddie, Lynn Wright, Larry Coffey, The Brothers...and from the 101 Audio Vault Charlie Davis and Brother John!
