...thank you 2015!

And that's a wrap, 2015 is almost in the history books!

101 hopes you have had a great year and wishes you (most importantly) a healthy new year!

Radio sure has changed from when we played 45 rpm and 33 rpm records! The good...I dial twist from my home in Orlando and enjoy Ktown radio, the bad...is that DJ live or Memorex, ie- voice tracked. In the good old days the DJ was only a phone call away via the request line.

We unleash the 101 Audio Vault one more time in 2015 and enjoy WKGN 1340 from August '75...Dr Al and Frank Erwin!

Have a safe and happy new year's eve! PS- Go Vols, hope to see you at the Outback Bowl tomorrow!

Make the Switch

Growing up I always had favorite DJs and liked to keep up with radio lineups. It was fun, but somewhat scary when a popular DJ would move on, to a rival station or a different market.

One big switch was in the early 70's when the WNOX announcers went on strike, protesting the morning show DJ...J Worthington Smith. The end result was a line up switch with Carson King moving from 7p-12 to the morning drive as King in the Morning!

On 1/4/16 another big switch is occurring as two very popular 101 Wall of Famers make the switch...Phil Williams goes to mornings and Hallerin Hilton Hill becomes afternoon drive on NewsTalk 98.7 WOKI!

On a side note...I'm typing from Tampa this morning and enjoying HHH chatting with the one and only Dave Foulk, hashtag modern technology!

Since the early 70's WIVK has only had 3 morning teams...Claude Tomlinson with Lester Longmire and Mr Schultz, Wilhite and Wall, and Andy and Alison. If you know radio, you know that's unusual!

It is so fun to see old radio control rooms, Darren Wilhite posted this recently, WIVK's studio in the mid 90's!

PS...Happy Birthday to Darren this week!

what's in a name?

One of the fun things about being a disc jockey is you could create an on air name...

Wayne Bernard became Charlie Chase when he moved from WKGN to WMAK in Nashville, Scott Majors aka The Aardvark is really Robin Huff, Alan Douglas (AD) is actually Alan Sneed, Suitcase Simpson used many on air names, including his real name, Bill Miller...and the list goes on!

Back in the early/mid 70's WKGN hired a great morning jock, they named him Smokey Burns! Smokey stayed in Ktown for about a year before Mooney Broadcasting shipped him to their larger market in Nashville at WMAK, same as Wayne Bernard. Smokey became Murphy in the Morning and the rest is history. These days he is Robert Murphy on WLS-FM Chicago, afternoons from 4-8p!

Here is Smokey on his last day at WKGN~

Bits and Pieces...

The Tennessee Vols are playing in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, did you know that Suitcase Simpson was a media guy there?

Did you know that Ernie the Bartender...was a bartender!

Pete Dryer was the long time GM at WNOX 990, his wife Trudy was my first grade teacher at West Hills!

When the WNOX announcers went on strike, for over 29 hours with one announcer staying on the air that entire time...he was J Worthington Smith and his morning show replacement after the strike ended was King in the Morning!

Did you work for free at your first radio gig? I did!

I visited the 15Q studios with Scott Sams...Kid Curry was on the air!

When I worked at WIVK...DJs could smoke in the control room, I can see Booby right now, stogie in hand as his golden voice powered the air waves.

Mike Beck just celebrated 20 years working at the same radio cluster in Virginia! Mike got his start at WKGN 1340 in the mid 70's!

Claude Tomlinson was the first voice ever heard on WIVK (March 1953)

101 would love to hear from you...stories, photos, air checks~ send them our way!!!
